According to The Wrap, Eugene Ashe, the writer-director of Sylvie’s Love, has been confirmed as the writer for the Disney+ reboot of the 1991 period superhero film, The Rocketeer. This news comes after more than two years since the project’s initial announcement.
Leading the Rocketeer reboot will be Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo, who remains attached to the project. David Oyelowo will also serve as a producer alongside his wife, Jessica Oyelowo, under their first-look deal with Disney. Prior to Eugene Ashe’s involvement, Ed Ricourt was initially hired to write the sequel, which is reported to focus on “a retired Tuskegee airman who takes on the role of the Rocketeer.”
The original 1991 film, directed by Joe Johnston, who also directed Captain America: The First Avenger, was based on Dave Stevens’ comic book character of the same name. It followed the story of a young stunt pilot named Cliff Secord, who becomes a superhero after discovering a prototype jetpack. The cult classic featured stars such as Bill Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, and Paul Sorvino.
Although the film received positive reviews, it had a disappointing box office performance during its theatrical run, earning just over $46 million domestically against a reported budget of approximately $35-40 million.
